Picnic at Hanging Rock is an Australian movie. Some think it's a true story but you can bet it's fiction. But what I'm intrigued about is this, I have not read the novel and I don't know if it's mentioned in the novel, but one of the girls spoke of a cloud only it was red, she didn't say it was a cloud from sunset or she would have said sunset. It implied she saw it someplace on the mountain.
So, is there anything in real life (however rare or strange) which looks like a red cloud.

In Australia, especially, I’d think it was a cloud of red dust, like a sandstorm. I understand they are common, and if they are lit up by the Sun in the right position, they can look quite brilliant red.

A friend of mine is a professional pilot, and he had books describing odd weather phenomena, which is where I saw this a long time ago.

Could it have been dust from the red earth? I think Australia has very red earth.

Just a guess - if you hadn't excluded sunset, I'd have suggested that.
