10And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;

12When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.

...........
16And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

This is Cain's crime and his punishment. He is cursed to be a fugitive and a vagabond as part of his restitution for what he did. But then, after the sentence is given, he goes out and founds and builds a city.

How is that the life of a fugitive and a vagabond?

Perhaps a fugitive and vagabond from the presence of the Lord.
It says he went out from the presence of the Lord, perhaps abandoned by God?
When he seeks God he will not find him, he will always be alone, orphaned in a sense?
While God will be with others and will be their benefit and joy?

Being visited by God is a great benefit better than success in many things.

He definitely decided that God's punishment was too big for him, and chose to disobey even the punishment. No wonder his descendants committed other sins - murder, bygamy,a.s.o.

Hmm... it doesn't say he lived in the city, it just says he built it. Maybe he built it and moved on?

That's a really good question. I think I'm going to ask my rabbi on that one.

I wonder that too. I read it when I was a child and it seems he got a pretty good deal.

Well it seems he cut off from his relatives and lost his relationship with God.
