In general, it is not a good idea to combine alcohol with prescription medications, but when it comes to Amoxicillin and alcohol there is no direct contraindication. With that being said, please keep in mind that if you have been sick enough to warrant taking an antibiotic, you should probably avoid drinking alcohol as well. If you absolutely feel the need to have a drink… keep it in moderation!

Whenever prescription medicine say not to take with alcohol it means DO NOT use any alcohol while taking the medication. Not only does it reduce the effectiveness of the medicine, it also can make you sick and/or have a bad reaction and may need to go to the ER. If you are sick enough to be on antibiotics you should not be drinking alcohol as it will lower your immune system. I suggest buying some good yogurt and have a cup of that once a day until you get better as antibiotics can cause yeast infections and the cultures in yogurt will keep that from happening.

So many people ask this and so many stupid people answer no it stops the antibiotic working as well, these people are not nursing or medically trained so they don't know, the answer is yes the only antibiotic which you can't drink on is metronidazole as it contains the same ingredient as the drug alcoholics are prescribed to wean them off the alcohol, it makes 1 in 100 sick, the pharmacist and myself we're taking about it the other day and he said people with little knowledge are dangerous, which is true, so yes it's fine to drink on amoxycilin, and it won't affect it working so well, have a great new year

Some antibiotics react with alcohol, most don't. However, it's better in general not to drink alcohol when taking antibiotics as alcohol reduces the potency of antibodies, the same ones the antibiotic is suppose to help in ridding the body of the viral infection.

I actually asked the doctor this- because i knew i needed antibiotics(tonsils swollen)- even though i didnt feel SOOOOO bad- i was goin to lunch and asked if i could have a glass of wine- or would it not help . He said the antibiotic would still work- but its better to take it a few hours before or after drinking instead of at the same time.

Amoxycillin belongs to a group of penicillin which is wellknown to lead to various degrees of allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. These reactions invariably starts with a rash which is in fact a vasodilatation of the peripheral blood vessels specially in the dermis. As alcohol consumption, per se, is accompanied with vasodilatation one can figure out easily that the absorption of alcohol will invariably potentiate the allergic reactions caused by this antibiotic. In the same way , if somebody is NOT allergic to amoxycillin ,concomittant alcohol consumption will not have any adverse side effect.

You should read the instruction leaflet that should have come with the antibiotics - but usually, as a rule of thumb - antibiotics and alcohol do not mix very well at all - so I would avoid the alcohol if I were you!

Alcohol will just cancel out the effect of the antibiotic They should have come with instructions on how to use the medication & the side effects etc.

Alcohol block`s the effect of antibiotics so you shouldnt really drink on them as you would be disrupting the cycle !
And doctor`s are now to told to give out antibiotic`s only when really neccessary so you must be in need of them and the chances of you getting more are very slim so ask yourself the question what is more important . your health or having a drink ?
happy new year !

Last Christmas I was prescribed the antibiotic amoxycillin. I asked my GP if it were safe to drink, and was told, No."
My mum believes that people don't need to drink to have a good time.
