That is so exciting! I always wished my mom would get me a dog. As for costs of a dog, i work at a vet clinic, and vet bills are things that a lot of people don't think about when they get a dog. You should start saving your money now so you can afford it. If you get a puppy you have extra costs, like deworming, their series of puppy shots, fecal checks (for intestinal parasites). And for dogs in general, they need their yearly vet check up, which means heartworm test, heartworm prevention, yearly vaccines. And there is also food costs, and costs for things like collar, leash, food bowls, toys. And if you get a puppy you might want to take it to puppy obedience classes, but i'm not sure how much that is. I am probably forgetting something, but i think if you start saving now you should definitely have enough money to get a dog or puppy.

If you want to find a certain breed you should research all the different small dog breeds, because there are a TON of them. A good place to go is dogbreedinfo.com. That way you can get a general idea of all the breeds, then research the ones you are interested in more. I personally like shelties, and pugs, and boston terriers. You can also get a mixed breed dog from an animal shelter. You can go to petfinder.com to find animals shelters and dogs that need homes that are in your area.

English Bulldogs are cute, they are not tiny, but they would do fine in an appartment, and they aren't too active. They are one of my favorite breeds.

Good Luck, and have fun with your new friend!!

check out www.petfinder.com that is how i found my two knee high mutts. Always adopt, dogs are not novelty items, they are tools and companions, guards and alarms.
Apt dogs have a lot to care for, they will always shed due to change temps from outside to the inside, and they need to be taken out to go potty. I would suggest an older dog, not a puppy, since most of those have already been house broken and have already been fixed, otherwise you will spend the adoption fee, shots and getting it spay'd or neuter'd in your first month which may run you around 100 to 200 dollars. Dog's shouldnt cost more than $100 a month after the initial setup, dont forget about your pet deposit for the apt. Also if you wash the dog in the tub Loofa's make great hair cathcers, (loofa's are those net looking body wash things, cost a dollar at Wally World).
I would highly suggest an older dog though, since you wont have time to do a lot of training (you have school and I am sure your mother works or takes care of a sybling)

I pay 40 bucks a month for pet insurance for my two dogs, which covers them getting fixed, Heartworm Med's, a yearly visit, and other things.

DO NOT BUY A DOG
ALWAYS ADOPT!

Most of them were euthenize because no one wanted to adopt them, they would rather pay $400 for a pure bred than $100 to save a life and a pound puppy.

I have a toy poodle and she is great. She only weighs 10 pounds, and is fully grown. We only have to get her hair cut every 3 monthes or so. It is great too because she doesn't shed fur everywhere. It is nice because since she is little we can cuddle her and when we go to the vet we just pop her in her really small cage. I highly reccomend a toy poodle. Your budget will be much less than $100 a month, it's about $100 every 2 monthes. If you would like to see pictures of my dog, go to www.randbdances.zoomshare.com
and look under pictures. Then go to extra photos and there she is. Good luck with the puppy and have fun with her! BYE!

Hate to tell you this but the terrier breed is very yappy. If you want a nice breed that is more quite than go for a basenji. This dog is about 17 in. long and 20 to 25lb.. Due to its breeding it does not bark much. They are also hypoallergenic and they don't shed much. Of course you can always visit a place were you can adopt a dog. I love mix breeds, and you can often get two or more great breeds in dog.

Boston terriers are good apartment dogs that require little more than a regular bath for grooming.
About the only hidden cost involved with any dog is unforseen medical problems.

you'll need dog bowls, a leash, collar, crate, and toys so that the dogs won't take to chewing on the furniture. westies are good dogs just get them shaved about twice a year.
