Everytime she goes to the orthodontist, give her motrin or advil appx. 20 min. prior to visit. On Tues. give the meds and keep it going. Better keep her meals soft for a bit until she can chew.
Practice good brushing techniques. Angle toothbrush to gums, brush big circles and get the super floss for braces! Can't stress flossing enough. You might think about getting a water pik as well. Kids are kids...most hate to floss. If she does all this, her gums will love her and not swell. The goal is to have a beautiful smile at the end of treatment, not a mouth full of decay due to poor brushing. Hope this helps. I am an RDA in a childrens office and we give this advice daily. Happy New Year!

I don't know about braces today, I had braces 25 years ago, but all I can say is PAIN. I couldn't eat that night, it hurt too much. I still have a ridge in my cheek from the wire digging into it. And I have nightmares that I can actually feel my teeth hurting. Looking back, I would have not had them, but I don't recall my teeth being all that crooked. My parents just did what the DDS said.

From all the horror stories of losing a retainer, make sure you buy her a pretty case to put it in while eating, so she won't be one of those wadding it up in a napkin and throwing it away accidentally.

Well, she will have some discomfort but taking ibuprofen should help that subside a bit. Hopefully the doctor you are going to is reputable and will give you excellent care instructions to make the process as comfortable as possible. If she has any problems DO NOT hesitate to call the doctor. That's what they are there for.
