Gingerbread with winesap apple sauce was a favorite sunday dessert in the 50's and early 60's. My mother who is now 82 remembers only the name of the apple used in the sauce. I remember the sauce to be white and thick and poured over the gingerbread right before serving. it was an easy and great tasting dessert.

You'd make this applesauce just as you would any other I would think. Peel your apples, core them, cut them into chunks and put them into a saucepan. Cook them down (you may have to add a bit of water) until they're the consistency you're looking for. If you want, you can also add some cinnamon and/or sugar.

Well, it's been quite a search... I'm guessing this was a family specialty, but there are several recipes around for gingerbread with apples... here's the most likely one I could find (you could use applesauce or cider made from the winesap apples):

Creamy Nutmeg Sauce:
• 2 tablespoons sugar
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1 1/2 teaspoons nutmeg
• 1 cup apple cider
• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
Whisk sugar, cornstarch and nutmeg in small saucepan to blend. Gradually whisk in cider. Stir over medium heat until sauce is thick and bubbly, about 2 1/2 minutes. Whisk in cream, and heat for 1 minute more. Serve over squares of Apple Gingerbread.
