Copy them onto another storage medium.....cd, dvd, external drive, flash drive backing files up and leaving them on the same computer does not help much if the computer fries. Back ups should always be removed.

My back up library is kept in my car until my brother and I meet he gives me his back up and I give him mine.

That way if anything happens to the computer or the house burns down the data is safe.

Try using an online backup solution like http://www.backuptotheweb.com . For a low monthly fee, you can have your Mac backup automatically, and best yet, offsite.

A good Online backup software will provide versioning (I overwrote part of my term paper two weeks ago...), and allow you to access your files from any machine with a web browser.

For most important files:

For your iTunes library:

Basically, all you need to do in order to back up your iTunes library is back up the iTunes library folder found in the Music folder. You can save it to a CD/DVD or a removable hard drive, etc.
