Gimme the truth every time!

Well, that entirely depends.

Will knowing the horrible truth make me a better, more responsible, or compassionate person?

Is it possible that the wonderful lie will make me happier, better, and more compassionate?

I would want the one that made me a better person. Usually, I think that truth is the answer. But there is possibly a situation where knowing the truth helps no one, and you are better off not knowing.

For example, I know of an elderly lady whose son had died. In her old age, she thought that he was still living. Her family insisted on telling her that he had died. Every time they told her, it was like she was reliving his death again. It was horrible. I kept wishing they would just let her think he was still alive. What good did it do to make her go through all that misery again?

Depends on the consequences.

If the choice had no bearing on my life, I'll take the lie every time.

If believing the lie made me do stupid things, waste my time and money, spread the lie to others or infect the other parts of my life with its lies, then I'll take the truth, because the lie starts sounding pretty horrible then.

Which is why I'm an atheist.

I had to discover the horrible truth on my own (no man would tell me).
Love is not happy with a lie, but is happy with the truth, however horrid it may be.
When you see the Abomination (Spoken about in the Book of Daniel) Standing where it ought not (In the Holy Place), (Standing in the Brides Place), (Bride/Woman/Female), then, Ruuuuuuuuun, do not stop to pick up your belongings, Ruuuuuuuuun.....

The horrible truth, because no matter how horrible it is, it is always better than the most wonderful lie.

A horrible truth would still not be the Absolute Truth, as Platonic as it sounds.

The truth might hurt but give it to me, as gently as possible. Just as long as it's the truth and not just an opinion.

Here's what Thomas Jefferson said that sort of relates to your question:

"He is less remote from the truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong."

horrible truth

Truth above all else. Wonderful (and not so wonderful) lies are a dime a dozen. Truth is a rare gem, to be considered and every facet appreciated, even if it is not so wonderful either.

Wonderful lies are a one dimensional morphine, to numb the mind and this one chance at life.
