There is a period when the guys are "full of it" and it takes heavy concentration doing something else(mathmatics in your head or hard fast sports(like soccer)keeping you moving to keep it down.
Its part of the procreation process which doesn't worry about morals or commitments, its job is to deliver the sperm to as many females as possible to continue the species.
If he can see a different girl he is using his imagination - and imagining about it (which activates the state of readiness). You say he doen't want her, but I have yet to find a man admit that he would walk past a naked version of that girl all set to get down and dirty. They would all stop for a quicky.
That's not to say that females won't do that either - they would.

I've written several responses to your question and had to change it because I kept coming up with the same answer. If a female gives me an erection it simply means that her body excites me. Plain and simple. I wouldn't jeopardize a relationship by acting on it, but the bottom line is that her body excites me. Sometimes erections can be very uncontrollable, not just for young boys but for men as well.

Post this question again in the Men's Health section, and men will give you a lot of feedback.
You don't want to hear from a bunch of moms, like me, that it's natural to get an erection for no reason at all. Mr. Happy just loves to salute, and that's it.

Of course, a hard on is a physical reaction. If he finds another women attractive it can stand at attention, that doesn't mean he wants to be with her or would jeopardize his relationship in any way. Just means he's a man and has eyes and sexual thoughts.

I know what thats like. Yes It is normal for even Christian guys like me. Its called a spontaneous erection and it can happen very easily. I know from personal experience. The best way to stop it is to just think about something else I suppose. Overall, no one will really notice.
Good luck with your relationship and God bless!

I've gotten a hard-on with girls I didn't want to date, and a lot of guys see girls they'd have sex with but not want to date.

I even took one of these girls to bed and regretted it, because that gal became overly pushy.
