I absolutely think so! The people who take time to quiet their minds and get away from the hectic modern world are the ones who are closer to God oftentimes. Back then, I imagine people were in general, closer to God, because of their simple lifestyles. I do think we should listen to what they have to say. We don't have to accept it blindly, but it is in our own interest to hear them out.

In response to Venom, I'm afraid you've misunderstood the question... Its referring to the account in Luke's gospel of the shepherds being told of Jesus' birth (unless I'm mistaken lol)
Admittedly, the arrival of an angel and the heavenly host helped the shepherds find Jesus, but we do have the complete revelation of God in the Old and New Testaments combined. That is all we need, nothing more, nothing less. Unfortunately everyone (and I look at myself here as well) spends too much time rushing around worrying about superficial things and they forget to take even a few moments out considering eternity.
We try too hard to ignore God because we hate the thought of being accountable - just look at the intent of secularists and evolutionists who want Creation banned from science classes when evolution is only a theory (science is about things you can test in the here and now) and it requires (in my opinion) more faith to believe it than Biblical Creation... I mean, if the universe was created from a Big Bang (or whatever the current favourite theory is) then where did the energy come from to create it? I mean, its the fundamental theory of the conservation of energy that it can neither be created nor destroyed but merely change its form... Now an eternal, all-powerful God could create a world/universe in 6 days/6 seconds or whatever from that inexhaustible supply... Anyway, I'm going off at a tangent, sorry!
Just reading one of the other responses... If you're referring to David (yes, I got caught up in the whole Christmas angle) then the answer is still that yes that he got closer to knowing God than many on the earth today because he made the time to. And he was all the better for it - he still made mistakes but ultimately he was a man "after God's heart". He sought God's counsel and guidance throughout his life.

If you are thinking of a shepherd in the fields outside Bethlehem, they would have had a religious education and so would have understood the God of the Old Testament
We are blessed with knowing the God of the New Testament in the person of Jesus Christ his Son.
Unfortunately many people are too busy to listen to what the Bible tells them of Jesus who came to Bethlehem, was seen be the shepherds and Magi and, in the fullness of time, died on the Cross to save us from our sins. He then rose from the dead to prove his has power over death and is, indeed, the Son of God.
God Bless you all this new year

depends on which shepherd you are talking about. However, almost anybody understands God better that most devoutly religious people today. They forget that God has a sense of humour.

A SHEPHERD!!!!
Dude! don't be stupid. I know you are refering to Jesus. ( I have muslim friends)
Jesus was NEVER a shepherd. He was a carpenter (after his father Joseph as it was customary for men in those days to take up after their fathers profession!)
PS: Jesus also taught in the synagogues. So he wasn't some dumb, uneducated man. He could read and the bible even mentions him writing... could your beloved prophet read and write?
okay, you may wonder why my response happens to be so aggressive... well, its because your question is really dumb.

Good question. What shepherd are you talking about?
Anyhoo...what is it that you understand about God? That might help to answer your question.

Those people understood almost nothing about the scientific knowledge we have today. To fill his longing for understanding he concocted a god. Why would I want to take a leap backward??

No, and it constantly amazes and depresses me that those who are religious could possibly think that those living in the bronze age could know more about life, the universe and everthing than we do now.

Yes, seeing you don't have to be smart or sophisticated to understand God.
