If your cat is relaxed... the tail will also be relaxed.

If your cat is annoyed... the tip of the tail twitches.

If your cat is frightened... the hair on the tail and back stands up, and ears may be pulled back.

If your cat is being aggressive... the tail swishes sharply or thumps the ground.

When approaching in a friendly manner, a cat's tail is often held vertically, straight up in the air.

The tail is often held in an upside down 'U' position when the cat is playing chase.

Most cats have 18-20 vertebrae in their tails.

Stud tail is a condition in unneutered male cats in which the oil glands on the top of the tail increase in size.

A cat's tail will increase in size when it is scared, afraid, or spoofed. It does not matter if it is a female or male. It just depends on you cats length of fur. If it is long and shaggy chances are you will not see the tail increase, because all you see is mainly fur. But if it is short haired, you will see the tail increase quite often. But don't be alarmed--- nothing bad is happening and it is quite common.

My female does this to scare away things or when she is about to attack it makes them appear larger than they are and hop fully the other thing will run away so there won't be a fight.Male cats are only good for sex and sleeping it is the female that is the hunter and the fighter.

Usually when cats are frightened or feel threatened they puff out their tails and arch their backs to protect themselves. They think it makes themselves look bigger and thus the enemy will be frightened of them. Its normal, all cats do it.
