It's both.
MARK 10: 29+30 Jesus said, Truly I tell you, there is no one who has given up and left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for My sake and for the Gospel's. Who will not receive a hundred times as much now in this time--houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions--and in the age to come, eternal life.
PHILIPPIANS 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus
3 JOHN 1:2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers
JOHN 10:10 "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly
MATTHEW 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you
LUKE 6:38 "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you."
Jer 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end
GALATIANS 3:29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise
But that doesn't mean bad or difficult things won't happen. We will have trials and tribulations but we will have the peace that passes all understanding. He is with us thru it all.
Eph 6:12+13 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Therefore put on God's complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place]
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour

Personally, I don't know anyone that has actually had God tell them about rewards. I think religions are the ones that are promoting the reward system. Some religions do have the after death rewards, but I do know there are some churches out there that are promising immediate rewards. There was a magazine article semi-recently in People about the pastor of a megachurch who told his followers if they donate lots of their money to him (the interviewer noted his alligator boots) then God would bless them by making them rich. (I think he meant make him rich, but whatever.) So, yes, there are promises of rewards in the here and now and also in the after life. If it is really God making these promises, I'm doubtful of that.

"Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, WITH PERSECUTIONS; and in the world to come eternal life." - Mark 10:28 - 30
So therefore God has promised us blessings(Ephesians 1:3, Galatians 3:14) but there will also be trials(1 Peter 1:7). As Much as healing is a promise(1 Peter 2:24), persecution is also a promise(2Timothy 3:12).
So yes, there will be good times and there will be bad times. But the difference is that Jesus is with you as you go through your trial. I like to put it this way. Christianity is our Journey of faith. There will be laughter, there will be tears but most importantly we are on a journey with the kings of kings.
Just remember this, the blessings of God always makes everything worthwhile. Good things does happen now and good things does happen in the lifeafter.

No. In my denomination, we have two phrases, "Theology of the Cross" and "Theology of Glory." What you're describing is the latter, and we consider it a big no-no.
Prosperity Gospel, that "Follow the Lord and He'll make you rich!" stuff, is a twisted form of Calvinism that allows one to assume that poor people are poor because they're bad people who don't love the Lord enough. Next thing you know, you're tossing the Sermon on the Mount out the window and looking down your nose at "the least of these." And that means trouble in River City, my friend.

He never made any promises to me. I just have faith that the next life *might* be a little easier than this one has been.

No, there are no promises to us. The people in abraham's day was promised land. The people in jesus' day were promised revenge.
