Did the invitation specifically say it was for only three people? I'm curious as to how they worded that. I agree with some other people here, if this is a long-term girlfriend, then yes mom should call and ask if it's ok that she comes. If it's not, then the brother needs to decide if he wants to go without her or not.
I think some people expect you to bring a guest so they only send the invitation to the members of the household. Or,they do like I did and forget to put "and guest" on the invitations lol.

I agree, it is rude. Like others have said, unless your brother has been with this girl for over a year or is engaged, there is no reason to invite her. Most people put "and guest" on the card if they have the budget for it...doesnt sound like it was in your case.
If you call, you are putting the couple on the spot. They have enough stress to deal with without your brother throwing a tantrum because his girlfriend cant come.

The person sending the invitation possibly wasn't aware that your brother has a girlfriend.
How old is your brother? If he is a teenager I think it would be rude to ask for an additional seat.
If your brother is an adult than I think there would be no harm in requesting an additional seat for his girlfriend.

No, it's not rude. If they were aware of the girlfriend, they may have included her on the invitation. They will simply say yes or no to the extra person. No big deal. Your brother should go regardless though.

Yes, it is rude for your mother to call and ask if the girlfriend can be invited.
The couple getting married made the conscious choice to NOT include a date for your brother. There are not four people in that family. There are three, and that is who was invited.
If he won't attend without her, then he doesn't get to go. It's really sad, though, that a person can't survive for ONE NIGHT without their significant other connected to them at the hip. Especially since he'll know other people there.

Yes, it is rude. Wedding are expensive and the bride and groom are only required to invite partners of guests if they are engaged or married. Dating couples are not required to be invited together.
If you know the couple well, it is possible to call and ask if there is room - but if they do not have room for additional guests, you have to accept that. NEVER demand that someone be added to the guest list to make you happy and it would be VERY rude to refuse an invitation based on that as well.

Did the person having the wedding know about your brothers girlfriend? Perhaps they overlooked girlfriend/boyfriends and other people not directly involved with them to have a more intimate wedding, you or your mom can call to ask but it is not your wedding and you can't force them to invite people they don't know.

As one answer said best is to send it stating the ones that will go ie 2 yourself and your mother and add a letter stating that your brother would also not mind but would like to bring someone, get him to state why he does not wish to attend without her. Like said such people are often overlooked. However it may also be the people tring to costs down if it means enough to him to attend with his girlfreind then perhaps he may offer to pay for extra plate.

not rude no but there may be literally no room for the extra person depending on how many are already there and especially if the reception is say,,a sit down meal with seating arrangements they wont have catered for another person.it cant hurt to ask.

No you should not call to ask to add one more. He should decline the invtation. This happened to me once and I declined the invite. I sent a card through the mail. I then sent a follow up friendly letter to find out how everything went and this is when I told them the reason I did not go was that my husband was not included and I couldn't imagine going to a function without him. Again this depends on how long they have been dating. If they are serious, then go with my advice. If they have only been dating a week he should go
