We taught our German Sheperd to bark on command with hand signals. Just get your dog really excited & say "speak" in a high-pitched voice until he barks. Keep doing that until he barks every time you say "speak". Then you can start using the hand signal of your choice while you give the "speak" command. Slowly switch from using the voice command to only the hand signal by saying "speak" a couple times first, then not saying it, but doing the signal. If you practice for ten minutes every day with treats and lots of super-excited praise, you will get him to bark on command in no time.

You are lucky that he is not barker. But Generally German Shepherds are not barkers.
if you want to hear him barking, tie him for a while in a dark place in the yard where she could get scared a bid. she starts barking and then call him to stop barking and go near him.
Or, let him alone in the house and go out and ring your bell severall times.
Generally dogs dont bark on command. They stop barking on Command.
Since she is a German Shephered you can do teach a lot more than barking. she can protect you by his fast and strong movements and body, no matter if he barks or not.
Good Luck

Try putting on a TV show with animals in it - sit watching it with him, when he does bark (when a tiger comes on the screen for example) say the word "speak" to him and give him a treat. Keep doing this when he barks until he associates the word speak with barking. It takes a few weeks of regular work but he will eventually bark when you say speak.
It's great to have your dog trained to bark on command, especially if you live alone - to be able to whisper to your dog "speak" and have him bark is an excellent security measure to have.
Good luck!

german shepards are believed to be the closest link to a wolf. Did you know that wolves don't bark, but if around dogs they will learn. Try finding a link that has a dog barking on it. My dog seldom barks but will if hears another one bark. Give a treat when he does respond and praise and say a command. repeat as many times as needed.

generally the idea is to get the dog excited while repeating the word bark, and when he does, reward him. It didn't work for my dog, but he's a Husky (not big barkers, chatty, but not big barkers) x Eurasier (breed not to bark very often).
BUT most dogs should bark when playing like waiting a long time for a ball to be thrown.

Your dog is just mellow... a gentle giant. Don't try to make him something he's not. I'll bet when you least expect it (intruder, etc.) your dog will surprise you.
