I have a Kodak Easy Share CX7430 4.0 and I love it! I travel all of the time and it is perfect for trips because it is not too big. It has many useful features such as video with sound and different settings like outdoor, motion, night, fireworks, landscapes, etc. What you want to consider is the mega pixels...mine has 4.0 but I would suggest to get one 4.0 or higher. I paid 180.00 for mine at Wal-Mart and I really am glad I chose this camera. Another cool this is that it comes with a cord that you hook up to your television so you can view photos and videos on the TV! Also as soon as I take a pic I take out the memory card and pop it into my computer and there is my photo! You can also buy the printing accessory and have instant professional quality photos at home. For the price you can't go wrong and the quality is wonderful. If you would like to see a photo taken with the camera you can email me....the picture quality is amazing! I hope you enjoy your camera as much as I have mine....good luck!

$500 will get you an excellent point and shoot digital camera. A reflex camera with interchangeable lenses will run more. The quality of digital cameras is dictated by the maximum resolution, the maximum aperture and the type of lense. The higher the megapixels the greater the resolution. The aperture is dictated by the difference between the two numbers on the lense i.e. 1:3.0-5.0. Finally, and most importantly, the lense is going to make or break a camera. Any camera that has a Zeiss or Leitz lense is going to take top quality pictures. Finally, remember that most cameras come with a very small memory chip so you should save some of your budget for an extra memory chip.

Dont listen to these people who say carl zeiss lenses are top notch . They are good but not amazing- not worth the money. Go with canon. I have a digital rebel xt it works great but right now im looking for the same thing you are. Some ideas - Canon powershot a640, powershot g7 , powershot sd900, alot of powershots. It depends if you want a point and shoot or a camera with good features. need more info.

A lot of people will say or tell you CANON.
But I would go with SONY or NIKON. Both have superior optics and shutter speed.
One argument is CANON only makes cameras; same could be said for KODAK. Both have missed the boat and are playing catchup with digital technology. I bought my mom a CANON for Xmas and was disappointed with the shutter speed and optics. I'm glad all of my three cameras are SONY.
