It is NOT serious and is a built in safety design to keep you from carrying out what you are dreaming. If it wasn't there, you would hurt yourself or someone else.

When you are sleeping, your brain wakes up faster than your body. Therefore, when your brain wakes up, there will be a few seconds before the signals get to your body telling it to move.

It IS scary, isn't it? Good luck. Pops

There is a spiritual theory that sleep paralysis is the act of your soul entering or exiting your body. Several times a week the soul needs to be freed of the confines of the physical body and does this during sleep when we experience astral travel. This is rarely something we remember consciously though. I personally like this theory. I have experienced sleep paralysis occasionally and before it always felt very scary to me, but after reading of this theory I welcome the feeling! And I've rarely experienced it since.

I don't know what causes it, but it's really common and probably not serious enough to see a doctor. I think it's caused when you wake up too fast out of REM stage sleep, where you're temporarily paralyzed for safety reasons so you can't physically act out your dreams and injure yourself.

Sleep paralysis is your bodies means of keeping you from physically acting out dreams. It's a normal function and is actually an important physical mechanism.
