By air - yes. By land - no.

* Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Sorry I can't help much, but I cross into Canda from Michigan all the time and all we ever need is a birth certificate and a picture ID like our driver's license. Soon that will change and we'll all be required to have passports. I am not sure what individuals need coming in from Canada. As a US resident I show the same ID when I return home. My bet is that you just need a photo ID and a birth certificate. Also, be sure that you have proper ID for your kids. They are tough on that at the border. And be super respectful to the border agent. I've never encountered a nice one. I do not feel it is a generalization for me to make the statement that the are all *A*S*S*H*O*L*E*S* but that's the nature of their job. If they were sweet and kind they wouldn't be very successful at their jobs I assume.

I think that you will need a passport. I think that after 911 the laws were changed so that all travel to and from the US to include Canada and Mexico on an Air plane you will need a passport.
