Were standard poodles originally bred for hearding or hunting or something like that? Or have they always been bred for pets alone?

Their origin is German and their origin was as a hunting dog. Their grooming style did indeed come from their work as a water dog (retrieving or hunting wild game in water). They are trimmed to be fast in water, but fur is left on the tail for buoyancy and on the feet for swimming ease. Some sources do recognize them to be of French origin, but most say German. At any rate, they've been around since the middle ages.

A standard poodle was the original poodle, the smaller ones were bred down in size. The standard has a more peaceful, calm demeanor than the little ones, and is a great house dog. They are also good protection, they are not the dressed up toys that people think of. They were originally water retrievers, and they love to swim. They, like all poodles, do not shed or aggravate allergies. Yes, I recommend the breed.

Poodles came from Germany. They were used as an all around hunting dog. From hunting bore to retrieving ducks. That is where the crazy hair cuts came from. They leave the hair around the joints, to keep them warm. When hunting in the woods they would use a fuller cut living allot of hair to protect the dog from brush.

France is the one that miniaturized them and dress them up. I current own a schnauzer but, I would put a poodle that I trained against and any dog athletically. They are an amazing breed.

They were bred as hunting dogs and carry the same hunting traits as breeds such as German Shorthaired Pointers, Viszulas, Weimeriners. They were avid "water" dogs retreiving waterfowel for hunters. In some places Poodles are still used for the purpose in which they were origionally bred.

They were bred to retrieve ducks and birds from the water. They originated in Germany. You will notice that they slightly resemble the Portuguese Water Dog. The breeds may have some common ancestors.

they were definitely a german water retriever...the dogs got their cuts because of the water...the balls on the hips and knees were to keep the joints warm the the ball on the end of the tail was for floating in the water. the hair in front was to keep the chest warm...
poodles are great dogs...i have a standard and will be getting a female toy next week...i hope to breed the toy (akc registered) if her temperament continues to be as wonderful as it is right now...

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Learn more http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?L1C4

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.
