check these 3 things first
1 that the parking brake is not engaged
2 that there is oil in the transmission
3 have someone operate the transmision with the parking brake on and verify that the transmission linkage is operating the transaxle.
? have you had the transmission serviced lately or replaced the transmission filter?

First I would check the transmission fluid level and add fluid if it is low. If the fluid level is correct then its possible that there's an electronic problem with the gear selector or the transmission may also have internal damage. I would take it to a transmission shop and have them look at it if the transmission fluid level was correct.

It's most likely the shift lock mechanism has failed. You have to depress the brake then shift into gear. So if you cannot move the shifter that's probably whats wrong. If you can move it into any gear then nothing happens...well you might want to check the transmission oil level. If that's full, then you have to take it to a shop...

Your transmission is gone... you need to have it rebuilt, Ford has never built a desent tranny... I worked at several transmission shops and seen these things come in for tranny problems at least twice a week. take it to a shop but beware which shop you take it too, do some research ... some shops will outright steal from you, but they will make it sound real good. Just make sure you check the www.bbb.com on the tranny shop. Good luck

with out seeing the vehicle myself it does sound like the torque converter bolts are lacking or the "flex plate" is broken, you're able to desire to get under the vehicle and examine to be sure of the converter spins loose, if so the bolts are long gone or plate is broken the converter ought to turn with the engine and be very confusing to rotate if it strikes surely or spins the subject is as reported
