My mini dachshund is in labor and i'm home alone. She's had one puppy so far that got stuck and had to be pulled out and helped along, but the baby girl is doing fine. If the puppy is born not breathing, how hard should I shake it? Meaning, when you wrap it up and shake it down to get the fluid out, how do I know if it's a lost cause?

Our dog is odd, but the only way to get the fluid out is to gently swing them down, to clear the passage. That's what our vet does, and it's saved three puppies. I've nicknamed the little one Sassy;;she's the noisiest thing I've ever heared! She screams while eating!

Keep shaking and rubbing it fairly rigorously with towel, You could even stick your little finger down it's throat to see if you get a gag reaction.
Sounds like you know pretty much what you are doing so just keep it up until you know you have exhausted all hope of a live pup. It's sad that they can't even take a breath of air before they die. I used to work with a Vet and sometimes the whole littler doesn't make it.

Okay when you can get a break call your parents or a neighbor or someone to come over to your house asap so they can help your out. Now with the shaking thing I think I know what you mean. It's where you wrap the puppy in a cloth and then you kind of sling it up and down to get the fluid out? If that is what you mean then that is the right thing to do. Also it would help if you can get some kind of dropper so you can suck the fluid out of its mouth with. sometimes the get fluid stuck in their throat, if you use the dropper stick it down its throat a tiny bit or just in his mouth and suck the fluid out with the dropper. This will clear his air way better and he can breathe. Also place the puppy on your palm and rub its back vigorisouly up and down. this will help stimulate his body to start breathing. Just keep trying on the pups even if you think they wont make it just give it a try. If all else fails hand it to the mom. She may know what to do. I guess you should stop working on a pup if it becomes cold and stiff. That probably means it died. I think you know the basic way to help out newborn pups so keep doing what you are doing. good luck and congratz!

I think maybe from the answers that you are confusing people with your choice of word "shake". I know exactly what you are attempting to describe. If the problem was needing to get the fluid out the pup would come around rather quickly. We've used this technique several times with success. So you think the pup was actually stuck. Stuck would mean the ***** continues pushing with no progress being made as to the pup coming out. It is normal for the ***** to push several times before the pup comes out and it often will go back in a little. I just want to make sure you're not pulling on a pup that just needs a couple more minutes. I have sat with one of my bitches at least 37 times and know it's best not to interfere unless necessary.

No, that's not standard if she has been pushing for that lengthy. A canines might want to not be allowed to push for longer than an hour and a 1/2 previously alerting your Vet. each and every now and then a walk around the backyard, on a leash, would help to get issues shifting, yet when this doesn';t artwork then you truly opt to get her to a Vet asap because there will be an more desirable great domestic dog, or perchance a useless one, waiting interior the start canal and this may circumvent something else of the clutter being born. in case you do take her outdoors basically confirm you're taking a sparkling textile with you in case she comes to a decision to squat obtainable and substances start. you may then scoop up the domestic dog and rush both Mum & domestic dog interior even if it really is darkish outdoors take a flashlight with you. This has occurred to me interior the previous and that's more desirable to be nicely prepared.

If the pup is not breathing, do not shake it back and forth. Put the pup's head between your fingers and let the rest of the pup lay across your palm. With your other hand on top of its back, bring it up and then down. After doing this a couple of times place the pup down and rub the pup with a towel opposite the hair growth. Rub against the hair all over the pup. You can keep alternating the two. This is what we have done with our pups when they are not breathing. The towel rubbing seems to always do the trick. It is taking the place of the mama licking the pup. Turn them upside down helps the fluid to drain. We have waited as long as ten minutes before we have given up. Good luck with your babies!

Call the vet or pack up and go. I dont think you should hang it up side down and shake it. We had to take our mini dashund to the vet to have all her babies and every one had to help. baby pup came out wrap in a twoel and message down to up. Good luck.

I realize i'm answering this and it is 11 hours old. I hope everything turned out well. In case you have puppies again have you tried the "snot sucker" (don't know the real name) they use on babies. Thats what we used and it worked great. I still did have to shake 1 though.

i don't think your supposed to shake them...i think you're supposed to vigorously rub its back. If that doesn't work, give it to the mom and see what she does. Sometimes they know exactly what to do but it is common to lose a pup sometimes. Good luck to you!
