My dog woke up this morning unable to walk or put any weight on his front left paw whatsoever. I took him for a walk yesterday and he came home fine, so I'm doubtful that it's fractured. However, he seems very much in pain and is currently resting. I gave him 2 bayer aspirin, but I don't know if that was too much, and if I should give him more and when. He is a yellow labrador, about 7 years old, and about 50 pounds.

Are you sure that it is a foot injury? Could it be a sprang muscle? Check his toes and toe nails, he could have tore off a toe nail. If it is either a sprang muscle or a foot injury there isn't anything you can really do but let time heal it.

If you can not find an injury I would wait a week or so for the injury to heal it's self. My dogs would strain a muscle and limp or a week or more. It's like a tennis ball elbow, or a over worked muscle.

I don't think that you need to rush out to see a vet until you know that it is more than a strained muscle. DON'T give him any more aspirin, dogs have a really high pain tolerance level and aspirin isn't good for them.

look at the other answers. no more aspirin. check for foreign objects in the paw. my dog broke her "toe" on her front paw last year on Christmas day. I could not bring her to the vet but made sure she did not put weight on it until the next day when I brought her to see the vet. He took an x-ray and confirmed it was broken. you cannot put a cast on a dog for a broken toe. If this is the case you should just wait but if it is a broken long bone then the vet will have to treat the injury.

you should check his claws to see if there are any splits or cracks in them- this just happened to my dog yesterday. His symptoms sound about the same as my dog- so that could be the case. I took him to the vet and he bandaged his foot and put some cream on it. If not, there could be a tiny shard of glass or a thorn imbedded in his paw that you cant see- you might want to get a light and a magnifying glass of some sort to check it out.

Check his foot very carefully, especially between the pads for foreign objects. Are his pads cracked? Check for any swelling, hot spots, or sore spots. Run your hand over his paw and watch him carefully to see if he flinches. If you can't find anything, rest him for a couple of days (no exercise) but if he's not better, he needs to go to the vet. Coated Bufferin is safe to give dogs, but you'd give him no more than you would a child.
