I understand that in Rome, a full evening meal consists of an appetizer, a pasta, a meat plate(secondi), and perhaps a side or a salad.

For two people traveling on a budget, is it acceptable in Rome to share a meal, sitting down? Perhaps one or two appetizers and either 1) two pastas or 2) one pasta and a secondi?

Any thoughts? I love to travel, but on a budget; however, even though I'm on a budget, I don't want to offend anyone or look like a cheap pig :)

The Romans themselves do not always adhere to the primi, secondi, etc rule. We recently returned from a 10 day trip to Rome, and we saw plenty of Romans just eating a plate of pasta and a salad, but there are few rules about this:

1-It is more acceptable to share or just have some pasta in less formal restaurants (trattorias, cafes and osterias). A ristorante expects to serve multi-course meals, but they are more expensive too, so it sounds like you will be avoiding them anyway.

2-Salads come after not before and certainly not with as a side (heavens above!). The salad is almost a palate cleanser, and Italian salads usually come undressed. The waiter will bring oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, then you dress your own salad.

3-If you are on a budget, do not forget zuppi (soup). The Romans make lots of bean soups that are delicious and very filling as well as cheap. Bean soup, salad and gelati will make for a filling and inexpensive meal.

Get a loaf of fresh bread, some cheese and/or lunch meats washed down with some wine for a picnic meal. Pick a couple flowers or light a candle at night on your park bench or in a hostel.
