I want to soundproof my living to create a jamming and recording studio. I don't want to tear down any walls or anything like that I would like some suggestions on things I could use to cover the walls, or any other non expensive or damaging alternatives.

If you would consider using the same stuff that other recording studios use such as that inexpensive Dark Gray Egg Crate Acoustical Foam then it could be applied with a product known as Handi-Tack which would not harm your walls in any way. Be careful not to get any thing flammable. Your best resource might be a special catalog order from some place such as Radio Shack or just go on the Internet and search.

try building inexpensive frames (like an artist's canvas) from 1x1 wood and do the corners with L brackets for stability. Then cover them with padding and fabric (maybe inexpensive sheets). Lean them against the walls. Does not damage the walls and might not even look too shabby. Better than nailing rugs to your walls (smile)

When I was in college, there was a guy who literally covered his whole room, walls and ceiling, with carpet samples. It made truly excellent sound proofing, and looked cool, too. Unfortunately, that was back in the days when you could get obsolete carpet samples for very cheap, sometimes even for free. Now they routinely sell them.

Go to any place that sells large sponges or large pieces of foam.
Get some sound proofing sponge. its cheap. It looks really bumpy.(think egg cartons with the eggs still in them in them) then put it in all the walls (use glue, double stick tape as long as it stays up). It doesn't really look good but hey it works.
