Pepto Bismol or Kaopectate are two of the most effective diarrhea relief medications. Drink plenty of fluids such as water, gatorade, or pedialyte. Eat a bland diet. The BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and dry Toast) is very effective is stopping diarrhea. You can put a tiny bit of butter on the rice if you need to. Eat in small amounts and keep hydrated. I know, it's dull and boring but it really works. Trust me I was using this one just yesterday. If your diarrhea persists for more than 48 hours you should go see your doctor.

Diarrhea usually (if bacteral) needs to run it's course. Drink plenty of liquids like sprite, juices and gatorade or other sport drinks. (to keep from getting dehydrated.) If able to eat stick with bannanas, crackers soups, rice and some other foods are listed online if you look up diarrhea you can find a list of them. If the diarrhea continues for more than 3 days consult your doctor. Good Luck!

Diarrhea

What is it?

Diarrhea means watery and frequent stools. It may be accompanied by fever, vomiting, or cramping. Viral and bacterial infections of the intestines cause diarrhea. The main problem for young infants or children with diarrhea is dehydration because of the large amount of fluid being lost in the stools.

What can you do?

The goal of treatment is to give your child enough fluid so that he or she does not get dehydrated.

Give your child a product like Pedialyte or Ricelyte. These fluids have the right amounts of water, minerals, and sugar to replace what your child is losing in diarrhea. You can buy these solutions in a pharmacy or grocery store. In addition, you can give breast milk, regular formula, regular milk, unsweetened juices, or water. Some children have trouble digesting the sugar (lactose) in cow's milk or cow's milk formula. If these seem to make the diarrhea worse you can try a soy-based formula like Isomil or ProSobee. Drinks like colas, ginger ale, apple juice, or Gatorade have too much sugar in them and may make diarrhea worse.
If your child is vomiting, you will need to give just a small amount of fluid at a time. If under two, give a teaspoonful at a time every few minutes so that you are giving about 1/2 cup every hour. If over two, you can give an ounce or two at a time, up to about 1 cup every hour.
Once your child stops vomiting, you can begin to feed the solid foods your child likes and is used to.
The diarrhea may last for 5-7 days, but your child will probably feel better in a few days.
Do not give medications to "stop" the diarrhea. These are not useful and may cause side effects, especially in young children.
Look for these signs. Your child may need to be examined if:

Very irritable (fussy) or very lethargic. Hard to arouse.
Up all night. Can't sleep.
Not urinating at least every 8-12 hours. Your child may be getting dehydrated.
Blood or mucus in the diarrhea.
Sore throat or earache.
Fever lasting more than 2-3 days or developing later in the illness.
Bad stomach ache.
Infants under 3 months.
Persistent vomiting or retching.
Child looks very ill or is getting worse.
Diarrhea is contagious!

The best way to prevent others in the home from getting diarrhea is careful handwashing with soap and water after you have changed a diaper or had other contact with your child.
Be sure to dispose of soiled diapers so that no one else will be infected by them.
Check with your child care provider before your child returns regarding their policies about children with diarrhea.
