I am driving a 2000 Dodge Neon that just had the malfuntion indicator light come on. It just passed state inspection and emissions and has a new battery, air filter, clean oil, etc. Had a 60,000 mile maintenance done about 2 months ago to check hoses and make sure there were no leaks and all that.

I tightened the gas cap and light is still on. Car has 65,000 miles. Any ideas what else this could be? Thanks!

Could be an oxygen sensor. Usually there is one located near/in the exhaust manifold. There may be one in the catalytic converter too.

Could be other issues. . .

The dealership needs to fee me $60.00 to have the diagnostic attempt ran (without even fixing something) so i'm attempting to self diagnose the issue! ----------------------- properly, seem at it this manner...$60 and a fix finished actual (that fee could be positioned in direction of your fix) the 1st time with the aid of fact analysis replaced into carried out precise...or a schmuck from Autozone telling you what's incorrect and you paying for a incorrect area lower back and lower back with the aid of fact of that undesirable analysis. reassess this one for a 2d! in case you have considered all the guesses at right here for what a CE gentle means (Derrr, it incredibly is in all possibility the O2 sensor!), you will believe me like the day before in the present day! Oh, why a dealership? You vehicle isn't under guarantee, is it?

Have the computer scanned for trouble codes. It could be a minor problem, or it could be something more serious. You can have the car scanned for free at places like Autozone.
