Almost. You do not need a passport to travel from the United States TO Canada. For that you will need to provide proof of citizenship and identity, such as a birth certificate and a government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s licence).

But.....

Effective January 23, 2007 if you are going back to the USA by AIR, you WILL need a passport.

By land and sea you will not need a passport until January 2008 (at the earliest)

For the most part, yes. Although I believe they may let you cross with the original copy of your birth certificate and a valid photo ID.

A law was recently passed that made it mandatory to have a passport but I don't remember when it goes into effect. The best thing to do would be to contact the candian border patrol to make sure. Then contact the US border patrol to make sure they will let you back home.

This will cause some major problems, I'm sure, for many Americans & Canadians used to slipping back & forth across the border to their favorite "foreign" bars. How will Officer Barbrady deal with a drunken passportless redneck in a Maine-plated pick-up truck with USMC stickers on it?

As I understand it, you need a passport to get back to the US, yes. I marvel at this. We used to cross the border at Detroit/Windsor in the early 1970s just to get better Chinese take-out!
