I was stationed in Okinawa for two years, but spent a year of that deployed on ship throughout Southeast Asia. I liked it, because I got to experience life in a different countries(14 total). Also, if you have never tried scuba diving, think about that. Okinawa is usually considered in the top three places to dive, as it is surrounded by many coral reefs, offereing great diving. I liked it. Of course, it is a small island, only sixty miles long, and 20 miles or so wide at its widest point, and 2 miles at its thinnest point. There is a lot of history there, and you get the chance to see a different part of the world.
If you want more specifics about the island, let me know. I was there from 95-97, so I am sure much has changed, but still remember a great deal about the country.
In regards to the typhoons. The military shutsdown during the typhoon. We were always "locked down" in the barracks. But, when we knew the typhoon was coming, you went to the liquor store, stocked up, and had a "Typhoon Party" while you waited out the storm. We had one in 96 where the eye actually passed over the island. We were off for almost four days. Granted being stuck in the barracks can get boring, you have to make what you can out of it.

I have been stationed in both Japan and Okinawa, I would say that Japan is culturally richer and more beautiful than anything Okinawa has to offer. Okinawa is laden with military facilities up and down the island. It is a very sterile invironment compared to Japan. It does have some contrast with it's small towns, super highway, dense jungle, and very large military bases.
Japan is a modern country with beautiful farmlands, large cities, attractive people, but not overly friendly to outsiders, Mount Fuji, and lotsa coastline.
Okinawa is about sixty miles long but rather narrow in some parts. If you are from a large urban area, it will eventually close in on you.

Okinawa is eye-catching. they have their own way of existence. Okinawa is made from many islands. I choose the small ones cuz I dive. if you're an outside type of man or woman that's the position to be.

Great place. Wonderful scuba diving. Good travel opportunities.
Biggest drawbacks are often poor relations with the locals and frequent typhoons.
