There's a whole scale of Australian accents from the educated accent your teachers are more or less supposed to use (which is rather neutral and should be easy to understand for learners of other varieties of English) to the deep "ocker" accent which nowadays is mostly used in the outback or in a mocking or bantering way in the cities.

As most of the other answers say: you'll get there. So the first Australian expression you should learn is one of the most important: "No worries!"

Most of the advice you have already been given is true. You will develop your own accent as everyone does. There is a broad range within the Australian accents due to the multicultural nature of the country.

You don't need the accent for people to understand you, it's not like it's a whole new language! They will understand you! You'll develop the accent over time!

You'll pick up on it as you live there. Don't worry about understanding your teachers because you'll be fine. The slang terms are a bit different but you'll pick up on them quickly if you are completely immersed in their culture.

Watch Kath and Kim all day? Then you'll start talking like this? As if every statement is a question?

Well, Sheila, I reckon you'll have one in a week or two anyway, eh?

Just keep listening to people talk, and you'll soon sound just like 'em!
