My sister has received three out of eight tx's so far and the taste in her mouth is nauseating to her. She brushes her teeth all the time but it makes her mouth sore and she is dealing with mouth sores already, another side effect.

I have aml, and had my last chemo treatment two days after christmas. What helped me with the taste was to eat a lot of sour things. I know that this will not help with the sores, but as a lot of people said, the mouthwash works. If you aren't using it, please start, not only will it help diminish the amount of sores, but it helps prevent them. Hope this helps. GOD BLESS

Some great ideas here.

My son was prescribed Chlorhexidine oral rinse to take care of any mouth sores . .which he never experienced in the 22 months he's been on chemo (he's very, very lucky).

When he was on high dose chemo (Etoposide and Ifosomide) he had issues with odors setting off nausea. His nurse practitioner recommended Essense of Peppermint to smell whenever he felt ill. It worked pretty well for him.

As for the taste buds . . switching between hard candies seemed to help him too. He was never all that hungry during chemo treatments anyway, and just preferred to sleep alot. We basically determined that anything he wanted to eat . . was a good thing . . he got anything he craved.

As with some of the other respondents here, I found that sucking on hard candy helped. My oncologist's office had jars of them at the desk. She said sugar free are better as sugar tends to draw moisture out aggravating the sores. I also used Biotene Oral Balance and ate what ever tasted "normal" which for me was eggs, potatoes and anything with tomatoes (Tomato Soup, marinara Sauce, Catsup). Unfortunately, it's a hit and miss process with what works for each individual.

Good luck to your sister and the rest of your family.

I had my last chemo treatment Jan 4 last year, and the best thing for me was some sour candy, different each time because once I had it , it would make me sick to think of it again. So dont try anything you like. I also brushed my teeth with baking soda. I hope this helps and all the best to your sis.

I chewed on ice and hard candy. As far as the mouth sores, her doctor can prescribe a mouthwash or I mixed up equal amounts of kaeopectate (sp?) benadryl and peroxide to rinse my mouth with and then you spit it out, told to me by my pharmacist. The kaeopectate makes a barrier on the sores so that they can heal quicker.

I had chemo. two years ago and experienced the same thing. My oncologist gave me a special mouthwash and toothpaste to get rid of that metallic taste. Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash. I believe Walmart sells it. A little costly but it works !!!

when my fiance was going through chemo he used to keep wintergreen lifesavers around so when he got the penny taste in his mouth he just pop one of those in.. he didn't have the mouth sores though.. with the mouth sores and the chemo taste her best bet would to be trying to drink peppermint tea it's not as harsh on the gums..

hope she recovers quickly

Sorry to hear about your sister. If they have already given her anti-nausea meds strong enough and her mouth sores aren't too bad, mabye mints, gum, lemondrops, or ice can help. Some say zinc lozenges help.

My oncologist told me to use Biotene mouthwash. No sores and chocolate tastes just great. I also use Biotene oral balance.
