You can use lemon juice, then add head (like from a blow dryer) or go out into the sun. This is a natural lightener.
Speaking from experience, personally as well as professionally, do NOT use blonde hair dye on dark hair. It will lighten it to some degree but will more than likely turn the color of burnt cheese. So be careful on this. The only way to lighten dark hair chemically is to use bleach, but most hair dyes that you can buy in stores use a safer type of bleach than the old school ones.
I'd recommend going to a professional if this is what you are trying to do. You'll end up with brassy orangey hair from your at home dye job and then have to spend more money than you even set out to, to fix it. Anything extreme usually requires a professional. You could start out small, like with highlights, and over time, your hair will be more and more lightend, because if you keep going back to get your highlights done, more and more of your hair can be used.
If you are bound and determined to do it yourself... I wouldn't use a ready to use kit from Walmart or a drug store. Go to a beauty supply store, such as Sally's, and buy it piece by piece. That way you can get it the exact way you want it. Most of the people who work at Sally's are in the Beauty field, and can help you with any questions. If your hair is very dark, you should try a developer at 30 and then a bleaching kit. Just please... be careful.

Well I am naturally brunette but I like blonde. The only way I have found to get my hair blonde is to dye it. The dye contains bleach. It is harmful to your hair. So if you are not sure about changing your hair color, I wouldn't do it. I've used semi permanent blonde before. It doesn't do the trick.

Time for some honesty here. You need to give your poor hair a break and actually splurge a bit to get a salon dye job. I had a friend like you in HS who use to constantly dye her hair, and she ended up with sort of the same thing you're talking about. Rings of color, uneveness, and a brassy orange like hue taking up whatever was left. You're killing your hair. And yes, I know it's not alive...I'm speaking metaphorically...for those nitpickers out there. Find a good stylist with a reputation for dying. If she's really good, she won't just tell you what you want to hear but actually let you know what would be healthier for your hair. And it might be to go back dark so you can give it a break, cut off the "dead" and frazzled parts, and grow out before you try going blonde again.

A semi-permanet dye will not lighten dark hair. However, a bleach-free way to highlight dark hair is to use lemon juice and sunlight.

Yes but it will take time, see i have very dark hair and i use to dye my hair with the lightest blonde color and it was still dark, you will have to dye it like monthly and eachtime lighter until you get the color you really want, what i used to do was a few highlights with a darker base color and it looked pretty light... Happy New year

depending on the level of your hair and the percentage of the peroxide to have to use, the texture of your hair will take in consideration too. if you have fine hair dark brown at least and you want to go to level 8-9 you can use 40 vol. of peroxide. For sure your can lighten you hair in a nice sunny blonde

you can't dye a dark color to a lighter color. if you need your dark hair lighter without bleach try perming it. a perm will usually lighten dyed hair and perms can be very gentle on the hair if pro does it

Go with a dye that is specifically for dark hair, it is effective and works better because it has better coverage.
