YES! Aside from causing great pain due to the lack of muscle and fat covering the bracchial nerve plexus, the brachial artery also runs right through the armpit and is also relatively unprotected. So, striking into the armpit could cause nerve damage or internal bleeding.

As a side note, according to the theories of TCM, the acupoint Heart 1 is at the apex of the armpit, and striking that point could cause a disruption of the Qi flow.

in all seriousness, yes. thats one of the main reasons people are ticklish there. theres virtually no muscle underneath the armpit. so when someone raises their arm to do a head cover like in jujitsu, a hook landed there easily breaks your opponents uppermost ribs in a spot where it can mess up organs.

The problem is how will you land a punch there? Do people raise their arms above their head and let you hit their armpit?

It can be very painful , there are many nerves and limphnode glans in the armpit .
