What my husband and I did was to each make a list of those names we liked. Then we exchanged lists and crossed off any we could not agree with. Then we discussed the remaining names.
Another way to do it would be to have mom name all the girls and dad name all the boys --- with the other parent having a veto over any really far out ideas.
You could name your child after a favorite relative-- and if you have two favorites, one could be the middle name.
You really need to be able to compromise in some way -- I knew a family once who did not give their daughter a name until she was a month old. For the first few weeks she was simply "baby"

I definitely dont think that it should rest with either parent if a decision can not be agreed upon. You could try using both names. For example, if you liked the name Michael and your spouse liked the name James, you could call him Michael James or James Michael. And then you could CALL him anything you wanted. You basically just need something for the birth certificate.
I have found that for the first few years of a child's life, their name is rarely used anyway. You always hear, "Punkin," or some other such nickname.
Good luck!
Just out of curiosity...what names are you trying to decide between? Maybe you could post a question on here asking which is better and then go with the results. The most votes wins. Of course, you both would have to agree on this decision.

Nope. If a father decides to leave the baby then he should pay child support because he helped to make the baby. Even though the mother gave birth, it is still the fathers and the mothers choice. If they still can't agree on a name then I guess the child should be nameless for a week or two until someone gives in. My husband and I are having the same problem. I love Noah but he prefers Abram. We will both decide together because that is what mature people do.

in my country, both parents have the right to choose a name, even though the baby is usually declared by the dad (maximum three days after birth, little chance for a new mum to run to the city hall).. but the child grows up hearing both names, the way the dad wants to call him/her, and the way the mum wants to call him/her. it's actually cool, everyone in the family knows both names and choose or the other, and they both remain for life... this way, no fighting and no disappointment...! good luck!

Neither - you just keep going till you find one that suits you both (and baby of course)
Why don't you put all of the names you both like in a hat and pick out one name each.
Then toss a coin, whover calls the right side first uses their pick as the first name and the other name picked out becomes the second.
At least this way you both get the names you like!!
Just a thought - hope it helps
Best wishes for your new baby and 2007

We had this problem, and eventually ended up with a shortlist of names that neither of us disliked too much! Not ideal, but at least none of the names were awful. In the end we decided that if it was a girl, I could decide, but if it was a boy then dad would decide.
Luckily we had a girl, so I got to name her!

I think perhaps Dad should humbly bow out and let Mum decide as Dad gets to pass on his surname. Speaking as a Dad, I had the same problem, but I had my way and later realised my wife's choice of name was actually better.
