increased dietary Omega 3 and 6 from flax oil and fish, and use an appropriate lotion daily (for me, 3 times daily) that works well for you (everyones skin type is different, so its trial and error with different brands until you find one that you like that works best for your skin). Use only mild/moisturizing body washes, and avoid harsh soaps.

hand creams and face creams are ok . the price of the product does not indicate how well it works . a great many of the large bottles of hand cream and face cream all in one are just as good or better at treating or preventing overly dry skin.
over all in the winter a person should avoid taking real hot showers . shower abit less . use a humidifier in the home to keep the humidity at about 50 % .

I have Lupus and Hypothyroid. Needless to say, I have dry skin. I've tried just about everything, (including the most expensive) and I've found Palmer's "Olive Butter Formula" works great. Recently I was in ivillage.com and they mentioned soaking a towel in white vinegar and placing it on dry areas for 30 mins, then use cooking oil (i would suggest olive oil) on hands and feet. Recommending gloves and socks while sleeping. I thought the opposite, but they say the vinegar hydrates the skin. I'll look for it and if I find the site again I will re-post.
Couldn't find it again in ivilliage, did a search in yahoo... I'm surprised at how much came up for using white vinegar. Sounds like a GO for me!

Moisturizing combined with placing a humidifier in your home is the best bet. Temporarily, if you don't have a humidifier, you can place bowls of water on or next to your heating vents. Also, keeping a pot of boiling water on the stove for a few hours is a great way to get some moisture into your home. Be careful to make sure the water does not boil off however! Good luck.

Any good face moisturizer for your face, non drying facial cleansers, lots of H2O.For your hands, again a rich hand & body cream, like Palmers cocoa butter. Avoid very hot water for baths and showers, provide some extra humidity to your living areas.

The most important things is hydration. When you take shower don't use very hot water, make it as low as you can comfortably take. Don't use harsh soap. Use mild one such as dove,Cetaphil.Don't use wash cloth. make suds on your palms and gently rub all over your body and rinse.Gently pat dry your body with soft towel. As soon as done it with in 2 minutes put body lotion all over. For me Cetaphil moisturizing cream works well. You might like Aveeno daily moisturizing lotion, or Neutrogena. For hands I recommend Lubrex Gentle Cleanser by Alerderm for hand washing and Lubrex Hand cream.

Try something by Neutrogina for your hands and face. They have this really great stuff that's really thick, but it really works. It comes in a little bottle that's white.

A great moisturizer all the time. Their are day time formulas as well as overnight formulas!!
It's time consuming but well worth the end results and lack of itching.
