You could try rolling up a news paper or a magazine and slapping it very loudly on your hand. Loud noise will startle him. Saying no in a harsh voice when you slap your hand let's kitty know his is being bad without hurting him. Let him know what it is that he has done wrong so he knows not to do it again. Sometimes this will take several times before he really understands. I hope this helps.

Physical punishment/correction will not work at all with cats, because it will cause them to fear you instead of correcting the behavior.

Basically, I think all you can do is when the cat does something unacceptable, loudly say "no" to him, and immediately put him into another room (with a litter box, food and water) and close the door. Ignore him for at least 15 minutes, and don't lavish attention on him when you let him out; wait for him to come to you. If he does it again, repeat the same drill, and he should eventually get the hint. Note that this will only work if you catch him in the act or immediately after the act; if you do this 10 mins after the fact; he won't understand cause and effect.

Are you sure he's a domestic cat? As far as mischief goes and punishment, there isn't much you can do if he loves water. You could scream at him and chase him, it sort of works for my cats. They run away from whatever they are doing but I'm pretty sure they think I'm crazy and this is just some twisted game that I invented. Just accept that you live with a force of nature that you have no control over, that thinks you exist for his convenience and you'll be fine.

I try using cat language with my cat. Can you make a hissing sound? They know what a hiss means. If you catch the cat doing something he shouldn't do say "No" and then hiss! He will soon learn that the word no is bad because you hiss when you say No. It may sound silly but it works. This is how the mother cat teaches her kittens and when we adopt them we become their Mommy. Hiss at him.

Although he may like water, I bet he would not like being "shot" unexpectedly with a squirt gun as he goes near the tree.

By the way, in my experience with cats (30 years) the males have tened to be larger than females.

i agree with the squirt gun thing, i dont feel that is really punishing him, it wont hurt him, just get his attention and let him know it is not allowed..i have also had cats for most of my life, and recently read that they will leave things alone if they have perfume on them, like furniture. i hate perfume myself, have used a non aerosol hairspray effectively for this purpose though..i also suggest giving him lots of toys, maybe one of those climbing constructions, that are made just for kitties,
good luck

izzy is the name of my cat, funny, huh? don't hit the cat. try squirting lemon juice on the tree. cats don't like citrus. as for the size of the cat, i really don't think it will matter. get the cat neutered and his hormones will calm down ( and so will he ) although you will have to be patient because it takes about 6-8 months for cats to get calm after a neuter but it definitely works.

There's nothing that you can do. Cats do not understand punishment. They are strange little buggers, and are not motivated by anything that humans do to them. You should just learn to enjoy your kitty's strange little quirks.

Plus, take down your Christmas tree... It's not really needed anymore, is it?

you shouldnt punish a kitten for simply being a kitten

if you didnt want a mischievious pet you should have got an adult cat instead...
time to take your tree down anyhow...

give him lots of cat furniture and cat toys (honeysuckle toys are great)
