I have found the Britta water pitchers work very well provided you change the filter regularly.

I have been using the PUR faucet mount water filtration systems for several years. When I first bought one, I had done research that showed PUR filters were better then the others on the market.
The PUR 3-stage water filter is the most advanced microfilter. One filtration cartridge is included with each product, providing advanced filtration in three stages. First, the microfilter reduces sediment, making it cleaner. Second, it reduces heavy metals (lead, mercury), chlorination by-products (TTHMs), agricultural pollutants (pesticides, herbicides), industrial pollutants (gasoline, additives), and 99.99-percent of the microbial cysts cryptosporidium and giardia, while retaining the beneficial fluoride in the water. Third, it filters the water over a bed of minerals, making it taste better. For best results, the filter should be changed every 100 gallons (approximately two to three months).
Pur is a division of Procter & Gamble that produces Pur Water products. Pur products include water filter faucet mounts, pitchers, side taps, dispencers, coolers, and filtration systems for Kenmore refrigerators of Sears Holdings Corporation.
The PUR Brand was created and products invented by Minneapolis-based Recovery Engineering, Inc. which was sold to P&G in 1999 for approximately $213 Million. Outdoor products under the PUR brand were sold to Katadyn USA and the Minneapolis manufacturing plant for all PUR products was closed in 2004. P&G maintained the household products and continues to manufacture and sell them.

I have one. It's called E-Spring. It's about $600 bucks, but the filter lasts for about a year. It uses ultraviolet light to kill all the crud and then a carbon filter to filter it all out. When my 5 yr. old daughter can tell the difference in a taste test....I figure it works! I'm not sure if you were wanting to spend that much, but If you want more info..... alacombe68@comcast.net.
