I had an older cat who mostly used the litter box, but occassionally was a bit lazy and just went wherever he was. He's gone now (not dead just living elsewhere) but the odor still remains. I've tried Nature's Miracle, vinegar & water, baking soda, even steam cleaning the carpet. I think it's diminished substantially, I don't notice it most of the time, but when I've been away and the place has been closed up or when my Mom comes to visit and comments on it - I do notice it. It's a rented apartment so replacing the carpets is not really an option. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Ann...have you tried Nature's Miracle "Just For Cats" not just the plain Nature's Miracle. It's an enzymatic neutralizer specifically made for cat urine/feces odours which works by breaking down feline urine proteins by thoroughly soaking the areas affected and allowing to air dry so it's important not to try and soak any of the solution back up in order for it to effectively eat away the urine proteins. Repeated applications are necessary for heavily soiled areas in order to destroy the odours deep into the padding.

We've tested nearly all enzyme neutralizers available in the marketplace for our exotic cats which have stronger urine than domestic cats and found that Nature's Miracle Just for Cats has always worked the best.

My vet has a special formula just for cat pee. I am pretty sure it is called Urine Away, or something like that. I am allergic to cats, so I have not needed to buy it, but have noticed other people coming in to buy it and they have said that it is excellent. There are things sold at the pet stores also, but they are not always good, and you may have to try several before you get one that will really work. I had a carpet cleaning person tell me that they sometimes shoot the cleaning enzyme into the carpet so it will soak the pad. You could use one of those shot type things for turkeys. They come in a kit so you can shoot meat with seasonings.

One other thing, it may be behind the baseboards, so you may have to let it drip along the wall.

Best of luck, happy new year.

You might try 20 Mule Team Borax. I have used it for human urine odors and it works. It also gets rid of fleas if you sprinkle it everywhere on carpet, under beds, along baseboards etc. Leave it sit for 2 or 3 days and then vacuum it up. It's safe for cats too. Mine walked all over the carpet and no problems. It's one of those "old time" remedies that a friend told me about and I was surprised that it worked for the fleas let alone the urine smell. Maybe you could try just sprinkling it first or maybe make a liquid solution or paste of it. The best part is that its very cheap. Good luck and sorry you had to get rid of your cat.

There are really only 2 things that work to get the smell of cat urine out of carpets: The first one is Febreeze in a spray bottle. For some reason, Febreeze works. The second thing that will do this trick is this product called "Pee-Pee"(yes, it's an actual product!) It comes in a large bottle. Either one of those things work really well.

Use Listerine. I am not joking.

Listerine has never stained or bleached out any of my furniture or
carpets and I think it works WONDERS.

Get a clean spray bottle~ and pour some of the Listerine in there
straight no mixing with water. (I have a spray bottle that is specially
dedicated to the Listerine because it works good to spray inside the cat
box before pouring in fresh litter. It helps take the smell out of the
plastic box). And if it's used on furniture, it keeps them from going back in the same spot.

Pet odors are really hard to remove, Tomcats like to spray their territory and I don't think this stops even if they are fixed. I had a tomcat once and got him fixed and I still say he sprayed all over the place. But any way try a stronger solution of vinager and water I wouldn't recomend straight vinager though. then sprinkle not spray frabreze (pardon the spelling) all over the place, then steam clean. Or go the local hotel and ask them what they use. Good luck.

Simple Solution Oxy Solution Pet Stain and Odor Destroyer
is amazing. You can buy it at Petco. But remember, that even though you are treating the carpet, you'll never 100% destroy the odor unless you can also treat the batting under the carpet. Good luck!

That is a tough problem. There are things that work very well at petsmart. I have found if you spay and neuter at 7 months you will not have that problem.Did you know even females can spray! I do have 5 indoor cats ranging from 2 years to 16 years and have not had this problem ever!

replace carpet and pad underneath as well as strip the paint and repaint, no other way, this may not even work. My friend was in the same situation, and the apartment didnt smell for a day after doing everything you did, and the next day it stunk, also we wiped the air vent and loaded it with febreeze.
Sorry bud your SOL, move or deal with everything, including you stinking like amonia.
oh, just saw that it was your animal, well say goodbye to your pet deposit and what ever other deposits you paid

My male cat did this in my husbands closet. I removed everything from the closet and saturated the carpet w/ lysol spray. Waited for it to dry and repeated this about 3 times. SMELL GONE !!! Try it..it can't hurt...Good Luck
