God with us.

It did indeed say "Gott Mit Uns," meaning "God is with Us," However, it must be understood this was a leftover from World War One, when the Wehrmacht was known as the Imperial German Army, under the leadership of Kaiser Wilhelm, who at least claimed righteous Christianity. When Hitler gained power in 1933, he did not enjoy universal support of the Army, who insisted on keeping their belt-buckle motto. It should also be noted Hitler was an Austrian Catholic. A very small percentage of the Wehrmacht were members of the Nazi Party. Most of the General Officers were old school Prussian aristocrats, and had little use for the "Little Corporal" and his henchmen. The SS, on the other hand, were mostly Party members, and its officer corps was recruited from within its ranks. Their belt buckle motto translated to "Duty is My Honor" (forgive me for not having the German phrase handy). Hope this clears the matter up a little.

"Gott mitt uns", or "god is with us".

Those who claim Hitler was an atheist are as honest as Ken Lay and his accountant.
