Yes you can....but before you do that...I SUGGEST sticking a thermometer above the fireplace and run your fireplace....

What is the temperature?

I don't care for 120 degrees....I'd prefer 100 degrees or less.
If you have a skinny mantle....rebuild it so it blocks the heat rising.
I suggest a good 6 or 8 inch buildout....but you may also want to contact a fireplace company that may sell pre-fab mantles specifically engineered for plasma mounting.

I'd trust that more.....

I am going to being with my usual mantra of not mounting TVs above fireplaces. Not because of heat, but because the TV will be too high to comfortably watch. That said, what I would do is get a carpenter to make a frame out of 2x4s to fit just inside your hole width, height and strong enough to attach a TV mount to. Pain it to match your wall, to be less noticeable. You would the lag bolt that to the existing structure.

If you can isolate the screen(kind of shelve or something) TV from the fireplace heat it'll be OK.

Depends on what type of fireplace, but I wouldn't recommend it. I'm sure somebody with more knowledge about electronics than I have would tell you that the heat is not good for it!

Yes. I figure if people put candles on the mantle without them melting, a TV should be safe. Be careful how you mount it though. Use masonary drill to make holes in brick so you dont knock a big hole in the chimney!

you could possibly, but not a good choice. the room needs to have more than one focal area and the fireplace is its own.
bet the warranty won't like the location either.

Yes, but I wouldn't prefer that, myself. I actually like the bulkier TV's that sit solidly on the floor.

I don't think plasmas are practical in that regard, although I'm sure they have a great picture.

No, not if you use the fireplace. If it is an enclosed electric one, it would likely be OK though.
