ive bought a new plasma telly and was wondering if anyone has taken a warranty with someone other than the seller. comet is charging £250 for 5 years extended warranty, so is there anywhere online etc that does warranties cheaper??? or does my house insurance cover it??? and/or are plasmas likely to go wrong after a year?? thanks in advance....

It's worth checking what your bank or credit card offer. I know that mine offers me an extra 2 years warranty on plasma and lcd tvs as part of the member perks. May be a bit late I guess though in your case.

Quite often, American Express and Mastercard will automatically DOUBLE any warranty on ANY item you purchase if you use these cards.

If you put it on the wacky placky, give them a buzz !

I think it's fair to say that anything comet offers regarding warranties will probably be overpriced in any event.

It's also worth checking whether 5 years extended actually means 5 years extended, or 4 years above the manufacturer's warranty.

Remember to consider when weighing up the pros and cons, how much you paid in the first place, and if it's a half decent make, you'd have to be fairly unlucky for it to keel over in the first few years in any event.

first of all, the first year is covered by your buyer's rights. After that, how often do tellies really go wrong - very rarely. If it broke down after 18 months then you could contact the manufacturer and say that it wasn't fit for the purpose for which is was sold as a telly should last longer. They will probably replace or repair. Any accidents are covered by your house contents insurance. Extended warranties are a bit of a con, invest the money in case you need it later.

These warranties are a rip off, and people like comet make more money from selling warranties, than they do from their actual sales. A new television should be good for 10 years without having to take out any warranty. if it didn't, it is still cheaper to get it repaired than pay for a warranty.

My advice would be to put £250 into a high interest savings account and then should you need a repair, you have the money there waiting. If you go the whole life of the tv with no problems then you have £250 + interest for however many years which would probably buy you another new tv.
