They haven't had changes in their diets; they don't have fleas or flea eggs; they haven't started any new medications; I have given them regular baths (with mild dog soap, which has never caused a problem in the past); one has mild dandruff, but it never bothered him before and besides, they are both going crazy so it can't be that; any other ideas as to why they are scratching? I have checked them over thoroughly and they don't have any scabs, tics or mites. I can't figure it out. Suggestions?

I have suspected allergies but it's odd for two dogs in the same household to develop allergies at the same time.

Couple of suggestions... add a tablespoon of oil to their food daily to add moisture to their diet. Wash them with a mild benzoyl peroxide soap to get rid of any dermatitis they might have. If all else fails, take them to the vet.

I have the same problem with my lab cross, I put a table spoon of cod liver oil in his dry food ( I don't give him canned or any other type of food) at night and mix with a bit of springwater. I did this for about 2 weeks and I noticed a big difference. Then when he showed improvement, I put the tablespooon of cod liver oil with a bit of water in his food every other night.
It helped my dog .... good luck

might just be allergies..is the weather changing where you live? are you running the heater? you can give a childs dose of benedryl...how much do they weigh??? if there are no scabs then its probably just the allergies...if it was scabies or mites then you would see scabs..... let me know how much they weigh....banadryl will help but you could also run a humidifyer...benedryl will also make them sleepy..so their weight is very important to know a dosage...if they are large say 70+ pounds you can do an adult dose but if they are smaller lab mixes go with a childs dose...pills are easier than the liquid....good luck and Happy New Years!!! smile

if you live in the country you might be able to get a hold of what is called "sheep dip" it is usually sold at feed mills etc. It does smell for a bit but works very well on skin irritation of animals.Specially ones with longer hair.

Feed them some canned food instead of dry. You don't live on bread alone do you? Add some cooking oil to the food to help with dry skin, not much though they'll get the runs.

dry winter skin or the food changed its formula
any with "meat meal" in it can be a problem since it doesnt specify what kind of meat so one time it might contain goat.. one time it might contain pork... jumping around in meat sources contributes to allergies - check your ingredient list
household cleaning product?

it could be scabies.
They burrow down under the skin ( so you can't see them ) and cause intense all over itching. People can get them from their animals (they live in carpets, and on bedding) too so be careful. The only way to get rid of them is an oral med from the vet.
