because I have a twin and we both need them well i am on my own now i don't want to feel like i am missing out on oppurtunities because of my appearance don't get me wrong I think i am doing fine now because i have a great personality, and a good attitude i have a good job and two kids but i won't be as discourage if my teeth are better i went last year to see the orthodontist paid my down payment but at the time i couldn't afford the monthly payments i'll be 24 in february when i get them and have to wear them for 2 1/2 years my question is how does this affect the adult life having to wear braces so late in life? and how long will it take my teeth to start straightening out?

I think its great that you are getting braces. You will love your teeth after they have been straightened. I got braces later in life and don't regret it at all. You do get a little self conscious because you have them on but that happens regardless. I love to smile know as a result of having straight teeth.

It typically takes 12-24 months from the time you get them on to the the time that they are taken off. (Most people can have them off by 18months). Don't try to rush the orthodontist because sometimes they may compromise your treatment to finish sooner.

One thing about wearing braces, make sure that you have a tooth brush with you at all times. You don't want to have lunch and share that experience with others.

Here is a site with good info on braces. http://www.smileconnection.com/DentalHealth/Braces.aspx

Good luck

It'll be over before you know it. And if you'll feel better about yourself, more power to ya!
I foresee you getting carded more frequently with them on, since it'll make you look younger.
I wouldn't worry about what people think, though. Honestly I couldn't see myself NOT dating someone because of braces. If someone is going to judge you for having braces, you probably don't want friends that petty anyway. Moist people are mature enough to empathize.

If people want to be an jerk they'll find something whether you have braces or not. In fact a more shallow person would go right for the braces because they aren't creative enough to come up with any real jabs.

the good thing is that two years goes faster to a 24 year old than it does to a twelve year old.
