I have a social anxiety disorder also, and I have most of the symptoms you have listed. Don't worry, you can get over it! But first I think you need to go to a doctor and maybe get into cognitive therapy lessons. They will gradually(without pressure) help this for you, and I even read that some people are completely cured after 10 sessions! I wish you the best, you are NOT alone!

Having had such issues before, may I suggest you not tell your doctor. WHY? Doctors want quick fixes that seldom bring about long term changes and results.

Going to a Psychologist, not psychiatrist, instead may be wise, as they'll help you really see if that's the problem and they don't just run for the drugs. A good one can teach you techniques for dealing with it, so you do not have to end up drugged for the rest of your life as a way of dealing with it.

Look up in the online Diagnostical and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and Illnesses, Social Anxiety, the variety of symptoms will be listed there. You do seem to be having some anxiety symptoms as you've listed several. But remember anxiety is 100% cureable, I know and I learned to first control it through using tecniques to control breathing and my thoughts. Learning to say to yourself, I don't have to be purfect, things will be okay actually helps, believe it or not.

One technique regardless of what type of anxiety you feel that can really help is this. If you know that a situation will bring about feelings such as being uncomfortable or actual anxiety, try this. It's a technique that causes the body and mind to relax and makes it harder to actually progress into anxiety and can stop the early symptoms, such as neausea. You slowly breath in through your nose, deep breaths from your abdomen, and then you let it out slowly through your mouth. Try it several times in a row, at least ten breaths, see even now how it makes your body relax. Then learn to breath this way at the first feels of anxiety and before going into socially stressful situations and it can ward off the anxiety reaction.

Also, most people do not realize that candy and other high sugar foods, even many simply carbs, such as pasta's not eaten with a protein can actually make anxiety worse, so if you feel you do have anxiety, watch that sugar and simply carb intake. Up the protein and complex carbs, such as those in vegitables and whole grains.

There are good and bad therapists, so be careful whom you choose. In many cities you can find groups for people with Social Phobias, they often help people more then anything else and they are a good source for finding a qualified therapists, since like doctors, not all therapist treat a given disorder equally as well. Most are free.

Don't be afraid to ask people about groups for people with social phobia's since lots of people have this problem. Also some phone books in the front pages list support groups or have a number to call to get connected with different groups. Many community centers sponsor such groups or could help you find this type of group. One thing about such a group is everyone will understand your feelings and can support you in your road to first controlling such feeling, then to over coming it all together.

GOOD LUCK, feel freer soon.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

Honey, you have all the signs. Please see a doctor to put you on an anti depressant it will greatly help. No one should have to suffer the feelings you are experiencing. Therapy would probably help too. It is nothing to be ashamed of, a lot of people have social anxiety. Like my husband.

I definitely think it's worth talking to your Dr about. He/She can prescribe something that will help. I take paxil which has helped me a great deal in social situations and also with depression. I wish you a happy new year and hope that you will get the help you need to make your life more manageable.

I can relate to you totally. I am on 20mg of prozac, and .5 mg of xanax for the days that are more severe. I would talk to your doctor and find out what works for you. Medication along with self talk and intervention with positive thoughts helps tremendously.
