Excersize is excellent.. it is hard to get started.. but start by walking an hour a day outside.. just dress warm.
Get busy busy busy busy busy... have a schedule that makes your days full! Remember idol time is the devil's workshop!
Lots of light in your home..
St. John's Wart Herb pills... over the counter
And pray for peace of mind and healing of your mind.. Ask God to bring restoration to your thought processes.
And do community service at least every other week.
You will be blessed and feel great!
Also eat foods that have alot of green leaf. Check the internet for diets that help with mood swings... Stay off sugar as much as possible.

Exercise and involvement are keys. You have to GET OUT! as they say. 38 lbs and a whole lot happier- Iam going for my second round. I am older and after quitting work and becoming a stay at home Mom-I gained 45lbs and hated myself, had no energy and started early having hot flashes and had no will to do anything. Now, 8 months later- I've cheated a bit a xmas but after tomorrow I will be back on a vege, low carb (no breads) soy and meat diet. I walk 2 times a week and jazzercise the otther- and even if yo don't need to lose weight- the diff. is Huge. You really have to force yourself, but then you feel accomplished! Too many carbs. sugars etc can have a reaction to your mental state too- or outside stress of course. Do some reading on holistic medicines and stuff-- GOOD LUCK!

You don't give enough detail for a good answer--but you have been given many good answers.
Just want to add my own experience for you to think about.
I spent 2/3rds of my life fighting depression on my own
was crying @ work
barely holding on
went to a psychiatrist and tah dah
very first medication tried worked for me
been medicated now for almost 3 years
and I don't want to even think about having to cope withOUT medication again
life is much easier now
IF I have/had to be without medication I would
but truthfully I would be so miserable-again
Your Mileage May Vary
best of luck to you
hope you CAN take others advice and exercise/do good deeds/replace those thoughts
but some of us do much better with medication

There are two types of depression. Environmental depression and clinical depression. Environmental depression comes from outside events that involve some type of loss. Death, moving to a new area, divorce, lost of a job, things such as this. The depression that follows events is part of the grieving process and with time we began to feel better.
Clinical depression is caused by a lack of important chemicals in our brains. It is a physical illness and can be controlled by taking medication prescribed by our doctors.
So in answer to your question; it depends on which one of these depressions you are dealing with. If you are depressed because of a loss in your life you need to give it time and allow yourself to grieve. If you allow the grieving process to take place in your life within time you will come to accept the loss and move on with your life finding happiness and contentment again.
If you are suffering from clinical depression at some point you will hopefully work with a doctor to correct the chemical problem within your brain by taking medication that will give you what you need. Either way, there is hope that we can return to a balanced life and live a life that is fulfilling.

Sorry to tell you, but you can't get rid of it. It's not like it's a shirt you hate. It's a part of you. The best way is to see a doctor. But if you really don't want to do that, I have a notebook that I write in when I feel Upset, Angry, Confused, Ect. It helps me out. I recommend it for any one who has depression. Also get out of your house, go for walks. Reading is good too. It takes you out of your world and puts you in another. I hope I helped you in some way. Good Luck.

Keep yourself busy! Busy people dont have time to be depressed.
Also, in the Winter time, get into bright light at least 4 hours a day...(florescent light will work).
Sunlight decreases during the Winter time and people get "cabin fever" because of it, but, those exposed to bright light 4 hours or more a day, often have no symptoms at all.
If it gets "worse", then see a doctor about anti-depressants. But, beware, dont allow them to "over medicate" you into being a zombie.
I wish you well..
Jesse

Change your outlook on things. Negative experiences should be viewed as stepping stones or valuable lessons to be learned from. Try to see the positive side of your life even though it seems like it is not going so well. People often say they are stupid for doing something wrong which can affect your though process. If you do something wrong say "I just made a mistake"...mistake do not make a person stupid. Mistakes are part of life's lessons to help us develop in to stronger people.
Get a book on positve affirmations. If that doesnt help in a few weeks you need to seek professional help.

I do not know the Specifics of your Depression as it could be Medical, Emotional or Environmental [ in Alaska with 6-months of dark]
Try RUNNING or some other form of Endurance Exercise! It will generate Endorphins that will help!
Thanks, RR

talking to your friends openly will be a big help, but honestly depression has to do with a chemical imbalance. it's nothing to be ashamed of, it is a recognized medical condition. if it's really bad, you can't just wake up one day and say "i'm not going to be depressed anymore" though the postiive thoughts might be a good start. medicines are sure to cure it. and getting out and enjoying life with people you love.....that will help as well
