Don't you want friends and family to have a great New Year? It's like wishing someone a Merry Christmas. Shows you care.

I'm not quite sure where it originated from but we say happy new year because we hope that people have a happy new year....better than last =)

Because it's the new year...a turn of the wheel of life...a new beginning, etc. A new chapter in life...it's quite natural to wish people to have a happy new year, just as we tend to wish them a merry xmas, happy holidays, happy easter, happy valentines day, etc (you get the picture).

People originally wished one another an aweful new year, but it made everyone feel bad so they switched.
