It's not.
In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.
Love and blessings

Do not concern yourself with the "elaborate" story of Lucifer, now known as satan. Most all of the "elaborate" story is not in The Bible of The True Christian Faith... The much embelished story come mostly from Dante and other such writers of the middle ages. And from the Roman Churches tales to scare the masses from the same time.
The Truth of the forces of evil i bad enough without all the embelishent. But what is evern more threatening to mankind is the trend today to glamorize and de-demonize the forces of evil led by satan. This i leading many to false sence of security. The Forces of evil are very real. They are the dominate force on this planedt. The only real protection frm them comes from God, what is occuring today, in minimizing or compleatly denying the power of evil, is leading people away from God and The Truth. Which is precisly what atan wants...
The truth of evil can not be adiquatly discused in this kind of forum... but I can state that I knew the truth of the forces of evil long befor I came to now The Truth of God... do not doubt the power of evil or the danger you peronaly, and every other mortal, face from this force of evil.
The strory of Lucifer/satan is woven through out the Bible. It is a lengthy study. But do not doubt, satan is very real and very dangerous.

You will find it in the book of Job and in the book of Revelations. In Job it speaks of God asking satan where have you been? and satan replies Oh here and there, implying that the devil still has the power to go where he pleases and that God is not finished with him yet. In Revelations it speaks of the war in heaven where Lucifer brought a third of God's angels down with him, after he lost the war with God.

Peace!
The passages you are looking for is in the book of Revelation.
Lucifer's fall from Heaven:
"Then the dragon, the ancient serpent known as the devil or Satan, seducer of the whole world, was thrown out. He was hurled down to earth, together with his angels." - 12,7
Banishment:
"Then an angel came down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the Abyss and a huge chain. He seized the monster, the ancient serpent, namely Satan or the devil, and chained him for a thousand years." - 20,1-2
God bless!

Revelation 12:9 - And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Most of the elaborate story comes from Dante and Milton - especially Milton.

The references to Lucifer and Satan in the Bible, which another answerer has posted, are rather terse and far flung. This article (the contents of which I don't necessarily subscribe to) deals with the various sources from which the doctrine has been derived. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:Ac4s1TR3Vz8J:www.theosophy-nw.org/theosnw/world/christ/xt-ibel2.htm+apocrypha+lucifer&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2

Though I am not positive, I believe there is more detail in the Zohar. Again, not positive. That said, it probably wouldn't be a well-known story today without Milton.
