I've tried the fourth answer already. It doesn't work. When I open up firefox, it opens two tabs - my homepage (yahoo) and mozilla firefox start page

Simply go to options in the tools menu, open the tabs tab and change how you would like your new window to open however I have now got so used to to tabbed browsing (they even do it in IE7) I would stick with it it can be very useful.

Open FireFox
Goto Tools > Options > Tabs
Where it asked "New pages should be open in" Choose "a new window"
