(1 Timothy 4:8) For bodily training is beneficial for a little; but godly devotion is beneficial for all things, as it holds promise of the life now and that which is to come.
But anything that is designed to harm a fellow human being should be un-acceptable.
The martial arts ARE such.

There is something of an argument because of many of the traditions. Martial arts being predominantly asian subscribe to certain traditions that stem from Buddhism or Shintoism. Certain practices such as Bowing to someone of a higher grading causes some Christians discomfort, though I have never seen it myself. There is also the notion of philosophies and teachings that don't come from Christianity that students are expected to strive for. But as these can include such things as Courtesy, Integrety and Honour I don't see many people up in arms about dismissing them becasue the text cited isn't Christian. There are some schools that teach "Christian Martial Arts" but these schools merely include a sermon at the end and wave off such things as bowing. I think this is wrong because more than just self defence martial arts are traditions and a guide for living. Doesn't have to be agreed with completely to take part, but the traditions shouldn't be tampered with as they are historical and culturally important to many people.

The physical part is not a problem. It is when you get into the religious part. Stay out of the religious part and you'll be fine.
