Most of the Indians were much happier with the Brits in power than they were with the local Maharajahs etc. Having the Brits in power meant a stable legal system, some (if not perfect) law and order, not to mention gainful employment for thousands of Indians who worked in the Brit administration, the Army (most units were composed of Indian soldiers) and the Police.
There were uprisings and rebelions, sure enough. However most were either based on religious fanatics or wannabe rulers (sometimes deposed former rulers)
In the end it was just such wannabe ruler posing as nationalist which took India from the Brits. It meant over 5 milion dead in the Partition, but then, they were not from the ruling castes... so who cared?

The text book divide and conquer. Britain knew about all the different tribal and religous conflicts and used those to play the different factions off of each other, managing to make each faction feel like it was in power while they were not. The fact that they outlawed guns in india except for their soldiers also had something to do with it.
