well firstly becoz india was divided into 100s of tiny squabbling kingdoms which the british conquered piecemeal then the indians weapons were far behind the standard of brits weapons and lastly the brits allied with some kingdoms against a common enemy and then attacked their own ally (i applaud the brits tactics and ingenuity specially the last 1)

Conservative thinking and inner disputes between Indian kings made Britons to take over. Being allies with some vast empires keeping in them under-control. Foreigners, also in today's world, amaze Indians (why god knows) as such even if Britons wants to conquer India again I believe they will succeed. What I'm trying to say is unity among Indians stil lacks be'coz of differences.

Divide and conquer. Make sure the native rulers are all at war with each other. Then move in and become their friend, helping them to fight other rulers. Do that with as many rulers as possible. Eventually, you find that there are British soldiers all over the place, they've set up what will become the country's civil service and police force. We were second only to the Romans at that kind of thing! ;-)

Mostly through intimidation and superior firepower, but only in the main cities. In the country the people lived just like they always had done and didn't care who was in power as long as they were left alone. It was when all the people finally organized that they were able to push the Brits out.
