The puppies (Siberian Huskies) are starting to wean now - they are 4 weeks old and was wondering if an occasional water is ok to give them? I assume this is ok, but wanted to ask the community. I have been giving them a milk formula (powder to mix w/ water) that I picked up from a Vet and mixing that w/ puppy food - this turns out to be almost like a milkshake so I thought the water would be good to keep their digestive system clean. The mother is starting to nurse them less.

HI
Leave a water bowl full with them at all times but make sure they can't drown in it. They probably should be drinking on their own in a couple of days. If weaning it is a good idea to get some powdered formula from walmart and sprinkle it on their food mixed with water. Watch the puppies for hypoglocemia and if they seem lethargic put some karo syrup on your finger and put it in their mouth. Good luck.

Oh Great more mutts to crowd our shelters. Anyway my vet said they should start on watered down wet puppy food at 4 weeks. I also have pups in my house. but I did not breed them. The mom isn't even mine yet. Spay your dog. EDIT: I'm 1/3rd Black 1/3 Spanish and 1/3 German and I call myself a mutt. Thats what mixed breed dogs are MUTTS, Mongrels, Worthless in the dog world. And if a person is half black and half white I call them a mulatto but I call my half white/ half spanish best friend a mutt. Just because you had a vet help you doesn't mean what you did is right. Breeders are supposed to try to improve ONE breed not breed a bunch of things together cause the puppies are cuuute. Did you even get the dogs checked for heath problems common in all three of the breeds? Did you check to make sure their hips, eyes etc were okay and that you weren't passing any issues to thr pups? Did you check them both for STDs? No. You jus produced a bunch of worthless mutts. And even if they go to your family members now how long before they get annoying and end up in a shelter. Chihuahua mixes are a dime a dozen. Second only to the pit bull in shelters. Yet you went ahead and created those mutts.

Hi,
Yes definitely! If the Mother is weaning them they need the water to be there as free choice, or they will dehydrate. They should also be offered a soft Mushy food at the very least 3 times daily, preferably 4 times daily so they can keep there blood sugars up.

Yes it is ok for them to have water. Just make sure you use a shallow low bowl/dish.

If you are giving the milk replacer, you can start backing off on the powder just a little and making it a little weaker. Not much, just a little at a time.

Yes, infarct you should put water down for them. Be for warned tho' they will probably spend more time in it than they do drinking it. It is imperative that young pups be given water in a fairly flat container, it is common for pups to drown themselves (fall in head first) if a bucket type container is used.

Leaving a water bowl where they can find it is a good idea. When they become ready to start drinking away from their mom, they will go to it out of instinct. And mom will drink from it,teachin them

it is o.k.to start giving some water but it is a good idea to get some wet dog food and maby add a little warm milk to thin it a little and you can thicken it as they get bigger and when they are 6-7wks try some small dry dog food that is what we did when we raised rotty's
